Seminar Facilitators

Associate Professor Hakan Basarir
Associate Professor, School of Engineering
The University of Western Australia

Hakan received his PhD degree in Mining Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 2002. He worked as a PostDoc research fellow at Lulea University of Technology. Dr Basarir has over 17 years of professional experience in research and teaching. He has published 50 papers in national and international journals and meetings as well as having translated a book. His field of research includes rock mechanics, rock mass classification and characterisation systems, determination of rock material and rock mass properties, selection and optimisation of underground support systems, diggability assessment and the use of soft computing methods in mining engineering.

Professor Phil Dight
Professor Geotechnical Engineering
Australian Centre for Geomechanics

Phil has been involved with the development and design of ground support for mining applications since 1975. Phil
joined the ACG in 2008 and has since been working on stress memory effects in rocks, ground support applications, slope stability problems (including the use of microseismicity to understand failure mechanisms), and 3D rock properties. Phil is leading a four year MRIWA project aimed at investigating the issues of strainburst vulnerability in underground mines.

Des Vlietstra
Technical Consultant
Barchip Inc.

Des has over 30 years of mining and mining-related experience. He has worked in production and rock mechanics in the deep level gold mines of South Africa where he obtained his Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Mechanics.
He has conducted mining research at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Mining Technology Rock Mechanics laboratories and in Mondi Mining’s research and development centre before migrating to Australia in 2001 where he has predominately been involved in shotcrete and shotcrete systems. He was with MBT Underground Construction for five years and is currently employed by BarChip Inc. (formerly Elasto-Plastic Concrete). Des completed his Gdip in mining at the Western Australia School of Mines (Curtin University). He is a certified EFNARC Nozzleman Examiner and recently completed his MSc (Eng) Advanced Concrete Technology through the University of Leeds.
